Coping with self-harm , Created 12 Apr 2008

Sometimes life can seem incredibly difficult to cope with and harming yourself, for example through cutting, may seem like the only option. Perhaps you are using this as a means to help you cope with something that happened to you in your past or perhaps it is a coping mechanism for the stresses and strains that you are currently experiencing. Whatever the reason, it is common for people who harm themselves to feel as though they are the only ones experiencing this. However, you are not on your own and it is more common than people often think. Some common forms of self-harm: Cutting the skin with sharp object (e.g. knife, blade) Burning the skin Picking the skin Hitting the body with an object or fists (e.g. punching or head-butting the wall) Although self harming may be seen by many as unhelpful self destruction, it is also accepted that self-harming is in fact a helpful short-term way for certain individuals to release the tension and stresses that they are...

Freedom from stress , Created 22 Apr 2008

Anxiety can take several forms but is generally a feeling of distinct uneasiness that is characterised by both emotional and physical disturbances. Emotional disturbance may include: feeling worried or uneasy, having difficulty sleeping and/or eating, and inability to concentrate. Physical disturbances may include: increased heart rate and palpitations, dry mouth, increased perspiration, increased breathing and a need to run to the loo. It is natural to feel anxious from time to time in reaction to demanding situations. Situations where we may feel anxious include exams; presentations; meeting deadlines; going on a first date; first day at university; first day at a new job. However, if this anxiety interferes with our day-to-day life or if we experience excessive anxiety due to a particular situation (e.g. one of the above situations or other(s)), then it may be causing us unnecessary difficulty. If this is happening to you then you may benefit from gaining assistance with the...

Living as a gay person , Created 9 Apr 2008

University is often a time to explore, experiment and to become and/or develop the person that you are. For some, this may mean revealing their sexuality to others for the first time. In order to successfully ‘come out’ to others, it is important that you first of all are able to ‘come out’ to yourself. Whilst for some, their sexuality may have always been known to them, for others, it may be that they are only now beginning to realise and/or come to terms with their sexuality. This realisation may release feelings of uncertainty, distress, anger or turmoil. In coming to terms with your sexuality, you will find that the University’s Counselling Service may be able to assist you. You can contact them by telephone on: 01905 5107/5417 or via e-mail at e.hewitt@worc.ac.uk (Elizabeth Hewitt) or c.nield@worc.ac.uk (Claire Nield).
